About Sutton Writers Circle

One of the largest most successful Writers Circles in the UK, the Sutton Writers was set up in 1986 by writers looking for support and encouragement with their writing, whether for publication or purely for enjoyment and fulfilment.  Last year we celebrated our 25th Anniversary.

Shortlisted for the Writers' News Anthology Award, our exciting new anthology, "Kaleidoscope: A Showcase for Sutton Writers"  is available from Sutton Writers or from Amazon at £5.95 per book, ISBN No. 9781905200887.

Kaleidoscope is a portfolio of poems, stories, articles and memoirs. Turn the page and the pattern changes - from scary to sad, from reminiscent to reflective, from fantastic to funny. The themes are both local (London, Surrey and Sutton) and universal (crime, ghosts, war, dogs, ducks, childhood and  lost love).  Details: Ros Black.  E-Mail: ros243@sky.com

PLEASE NOTE: We now meet at The Friends Meeting House, Cedar Road, Sutton, usually on the second Friday of each month to catch up with the latest success stories, hear winning competition entries and listen to interesting and entertaining speakers from various sectors of the writing world.  Our speakers have included such popular writers as Simon Brett, Graham Hurley and Pauline Bentley.  All have a story to tell which can inspire, educate and inform.

The monthly meetings begin at 8 p.m. with a chance for informal chats with other members before the meeting proper opens with relevant notices and announcements of in-house competition winners and there is usually a chance for the winner of the previous month’s competition to read the winning entry.  Then, we all settle down to enjoy the main speaker and there will normally be an opportunity to ask questions at the end.  Occasionally, we have a lively workshop instead of a speaker.  Finally, there is another chance to chat with fellow members and form friendships before the evening ends at 10.00 p.m.

Established members host fortnightly or monthly workshops in their own homes where fellow members can read examples of their work for constructive criticism and comment.

The annual membership fee is currently £26.  This covers admission to each monthly meeting, in-house competitions, attendance at workshops and a monthly newsletter.  This represents very good value particularly for those who participate in the free workshops where they can benefit from the knowledge and expertise of other writers.

You can pay to become a member at the first main meeting you attend but if you want to check us out first, occasional visitors pay £4.00 on the door.
